At the end of the day the company discarded cartons of leftover food, almost undamaged, into the dumpsters between the two sheds, so Stu and I began checking them every day. We dove for oyster mushrooms, champagne grapes, and tiny yellow tomatoes shaped like lightbulbs, thrilled with each find. I loved the silly, shameless ease of it, the way one could just get by so simply. We carried our treasures back home, invited friends, and made stir fries in our wok.
